The “Heads” Series – Contemporary Graphic Art by Jolanta Johnsson

In the “Heads” series, Jolanta Johnsson focuses on the human being – emotions, experiences, and the traces left by the passage of time. The series includes the works “Stefan”, “Nika”, “Magdalena”, and “Stanisław”, created using linocut and the artist’s own technique.

Although each graphic depicts a specific individual, these are not traditional portraits. The artist uses the face as a starting point for a broader reflection on human identity. Realistically rendered features are combined with simplified silhouettes and a dense network of lines, which becomes one of the most important visual elements of the entire series.

Between Portrait and Symbol

The protagonists of the series differ in age, gender, and facial expression, yet they share a common visual language. Each figure exists simultaneously as an individual person and as a universal symbol of human experience. In Johnsson’s works, the face serves not only as a means of identification but also as a carrier of emotions and stories embedded in human life.

The recurring motif of intersecting lines can be interpreted in many ways. It creates a structure reminiscent of a network of connections, memories, and thoughts that shape our identity. As a result, the artworks remain open to personal interpretation.

Gesture and Gaze

In each work, the artist draws attention to a different aspect of human presence. In “Stefan” and “Stanisław”, the face and its expression play the central role. In “Nika”, the hands gain particular significance as a universal symbol of communication and action. “Magdalena” captivates with a calm, focused gaze that lends the composition a more introspective character.

The restrained monochromatic palette directs the viewer’s attention to form and emotional expression. As a result, the series remains coherent while allowing each artwork to maintain its own distinctive identity.

Contemporary Linocut and the Artist’s Own Technique

The “Heads” series demonstrates how the traditional medium of linocut can be employed in a contemporary way.

By combining figuration with abstract structures, the works from the “Heads” series appeal both to collectors of contemporary art and to those seeking original artworks for interior spaces. It is a series that encourages viewers to pause and look at the human being not as a portrait of a specific person, but as a record of experiences, emotions, and relationships that shape human life.
