Artist statement
The role of light in a painting and its influence on color have always fascinated me.
In my earlier painting series, which I called Luminosities, light played a central role; it was the element that defined and shaped my paintings.
In my newest series, Black Pearls, I focus on the relationship between light and shadow and, in doing so, discover entirely new spaces of meaning. Shells and mother-of-pearl no longer shimmer in an abundance of bright colors. The rich palette of hues is still present, but now they are far subtler. I try to show how many shades of brilliance are hidden in apparent grayness.
This search naturally raises philosophical questions about life, its bright and dark moments. How many nuances does each of our lives have? Usually, we notice only those in the full splendor of success, while great beauty is also hidden in everyday life.
So my pearls are not really black; it is rather a somewhat misleading name. At first glance, they may appear dark, but they contain the entire spectrum of color within them. Subtle, delicate, hidden. The idea of dark pearls emerged as a counterpoint to the bright ones.
The symbolism of shells and pearls is extremely rich and has fascinated people for centuries. I try to refresh these motifs and present them through my own sensitivity. Shell and pearl are metaphors for me that give my paintings a poetic character while also carrying deep symbolic meaning.
For me, shells and pearls symbolize femininity, beauty, and transformation. Visually, their organic forms fascinate me. The variety of colors and the changeability of light reflections are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me.
